Advent Series: Jesus - Fulfillment of the Prophecy (Matthew)
This Advent season, we turn to Matthew's gospel and to the prophetic testimony he uses to show that Jesus was indeed the long-awaited Messiah.  We will focus primarily on Isaiah, a prophet from the south who lived during the civil war between Israel and Judah and saw Assyria crush the Northern Kingdom in 722 B.C.  In spite of the hopelessness of his time, Isaiah stands as one of the most hopeful prophets ("They that wait on the Lord will renew their strength" - Isaiah 40:31).

As we wait on the Lord this Advent, we will gather around the ancient words of a prophet content to wait for seven centuries before the dawning of Christ in human history.  Matthew saw in the ancient testimony a key to understanding the miracle of Jesus in their very midst, but even he and the other followers of Jesus did not fully understand until after Jesus' death and resurrection.  Perhaps we can discover too that what we wait for is already among us.
