Volunteer Opportunities from Love, INC:
A young woman who lives in Wilmington is pregnant and is expecting her son at the end of September. She has no family in Delaware and does not work due to a health condition. The baby is doing great, but she does not have anything for the baby but a crib. She receives SSI and SSD which is just enough to pay her rent and utilities. She is applying for food stamps and WIC and other government assistance once she gets her photo ID. At this time, she is in need of a newborn car seat, bottles, bibs, socks, onsies, blankets, etc for the baby.

Love INC received a call from a gentleman whose mother is 88 years old and suffers from mild Alzheimer and frequent failing. She uses a walker to get around, however, she is still failing and her family is trying to locate a power chair for her. He indicated that he applied for a power chair but was denied because his mother is on Hospice. I spoke with him about seeing if Hospice would assist with locating or providing the chair and he indicated that they are aware of his attentions and have not offered to assist or provide a chair for her.

A young mother of two who lives in Newark is expecting her third child in the beginning of September and she is in the need of a crib. She and her two children are currently living with a friend and she is currently attending classes at Career Services and she is studying management. A young mother of two young boys needs a youth bed for her three year old boy as his bed broke. She does not receive any support from the father of the children. She currently does not work, but is going through a career program for billing and will be given a job once she completes the course. She lives in the Newark area.

Her children are 4, a set of twins age 2 and a 1 year old. She is currently going thru the Career Team to learn a new job skill. She receives food stamps and some public assistance.

A gentleman who lives in Newark is looking for someone who can work on his car. He has a 1991 Ford escort that leaks oil, the check engine light is on, was advised that his front axle needs to be replaced. He currently lives in a Pop-Up Camper on a friend’s lot. He does not have running water or electricity. He uses a car battery to generate the camper and purchases bottled water. He is not able to work, but does collect a small disability check each month. He really does not have the funds to take the car to a garage to get fixed nor to purchase another vehicle.

Midwest Flooding – how can we help?  UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief is already on the scene helping with both emergency and long-term assistance.  From the web site below: “In partnership with United Methodists and our ecumenical partners, we are preparing to assist persons over the long term. Once the emergency phase is complete, we will be ready with case management, training & other services to help affected communities. In the meantime, we pray for all those impacted by wind & water and those assisting in the emergency phase.”  To make a real difference, please hold these communities in prayer, then bring your check to church with UMCOR Advance 901670 in the memo line or donate online at http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umcor/.   (Note: The Steenhoek’s report their families in Iowa are safe.)
