On Sunday, June 20, 2010, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, Switch Skateboarding & Snowboarding Shop in Newark (http://www.switchskateandsnow.com/) and Skyline United Methodist Church in Pike Creek (http://www.skylinechurch.net) will jointly sponsor a Skate Jam for area skateboarders of all ages and abilities in the upper parking lot of Skyline Church (3100 Skyline Drive, Wilmington, DE – at the corner of Skyline Drive and New Linden Hill Road, near Skyline Middle School). This event will be free to the public as part of the global Go Skateboarding Day (June 21) network of events (http://www.goskateboardingday.org/). Skateboarders of all ages and stages will be able to come together and skate on a course of ten different elements, including boxes and rails, while enjoying music from area bands. Prizes will be awarded for competitions and raffled off throughout the day. Vendors will set up in the upper parking lot with food, skateboard supplies and displays. Wilmington University will be sponsoring a booth featuring information about their new Game Design and Development Bachelor of Science degree program (http://wilmu.edu/gamedesign). The Diamond State Roller Girls team members (http://diamondstaterollergirls.com/dsrg/) will be hosting a booth with crafts and skate demonstrations that day after their bout at Christiana Skate Center Saturday evening, June 19, at 7:00. All skateboarders will be required to wear helmets and sign a liability waiver (helmets will be available at the event). Pre-registration is encouraged by signing and mailing the waiver form to Skyline UMC (available as a PDF document on the church website). Switch Skateboarding and Snowboarding shop has long been a supporter of area skateboarders, sponsoring street Skate Jam events in Newark. Members and pastors of Skyline United Methodist Church conceived of the event when area skateboarders began using the church parking lot to skate on curbs and picnic tables on the church grounds. They contacted Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach, DE (http://www.epworth-rehoboth.org/) after reading about Skate Jam events that church had sponsored over the past few years. The event sponsors hope to sponsor future Skate Jams throughout the summer. |
