Announcements - March 7, 2010Thanks to everyone who set up our sanctuary for the Lent Season: Cheri Moorhead, Karen Boyce, Josh Magnusson, Jon Morris, and Gregg McCauley. Special thanks to Beth Morris, who designed and fabricated the “sails” in the wells of the worship platform area. Josh, Jon and Gregg also worked extensively in the attic area insulating ductwork, installing a duct return, and repairing ceiling tape damaged by water. Cheri and Karen maintain our altar area each week, and welcome anyone who would like to join their Altar “Guild”! Thank you to Ivan (Mr. Coffee) Turner, Jr., Gregg (Pancake Slinger) McCauley, and the other men and women (notably Deb (Sidearm) McCauley) who made possible our “Sunday Gras” pancake breakfast to kick off Lent on February 14. Thank you so much, Steve Bartlett, for working so tirelessly behind the scenes to clean and maintain our hallways, stairwells, lights, and sidewalks (in the snow!). You are a blessing to us all. Thank you also to everyone on our team of cleaning volunteers who come in every week to make our church building a place of warm hospitality and welcome to spiritual pilgrims. Last week, our insurance carrier agreed to cover a Skate Day event we are planning for local youth on June 19 (June 21 is National Skate Day). The City of Newark is planning to build a Skate Park on Papermill Road. If you are interested in helping to minister to area youth who skate, please contact Pastor Bo at pastors@skylinechurch.net or call the church office. Each Wednesday evening during Lent (March), Pastor Vicki will be hosting a time of silent prayer and reflection from 7:00-7:45 in the Prayer Chapel in the West Corner of our sanctuary (the one to the left as you face the altar). After the time of prayer, Pastor Bo will be hosting a conversation about “How to Read the Bible with Head and Heart” from 7:45-8:45 in the Conference room off of the Foyer. Please join us and feed your soul this season. During worship, the Holy Spirit surrounds us, and specific prayer-needs come to our thought. It brings great relief to entrust these concerns of our heart to God, via our praying team, and leave church knowing our cares are securely in God’s grip. In gratitude for those praying with us, following worship services. For those in need … our Stephen Ministers are now in active service, for those requesting care for a wide range of needs. Some info: confirmation refers to the decision a person makes to respond to God’s grace with intentional commitment, publicly reaffirming his or her baptismal vows before the congregation. Most confirmands are youth between 11 & 14 who have been nurtured in the church since their baptism as an infant or young child. Most churches offer a deliberate time of preparation before this service. During confirmation class, confirmands learn about the meaning of Christian faith; the history & teachings of the United Methodist church; and an explanation of the baptismal & membership vows they will be professing. Special thanks to those in our congregation who contributed to Skyline through their company’s matching gifts program. Perhaps your company offers a matching gift program. Many times, they’ll match dollar for dollar! What a terrific, easy way to raise money for your church community. Check with your company to see if they are willing to match your gift. Many thanks to everyone for keeping up with financial commitments to the church, especially in light of the struggle to get to church during the recent snow storms. Financial Appeal: The graphs in the Financial Stewardship Update box show that we continue to run a deficit. It is increasingly difficult to pay our fixed expenses, and we are unable to pay Conference and District Apportionments. Skyline's approved budget requires $7500/week. Subtracting approximately $900/week for Apportionments, leaves $6600/week. Average receipts towards our trimmed, "bare bones" budget are far less than needed. Cost control of variable expenses and donations of time and money have helped. We thank all of you for your consistent financial support and for considerations of increased giving that are vital to continue God's ministry and mission at Skyline. May today there be peace within. “Lenten Fast” by William Arthur Ward (American author, teacher and pastor, 1921-1994)
